238 - Georg Jensen sterling silver tea service with bone handles, c.1935. Lot 394 - Chester County, PA line & berry inlaid walnut chest. As found, top & brasses replaced, patches. Lot 475 - Oil on canvas painting titled “The Shrimp Girl” of a North Sea beach and signed “George Hitchcock 1886”. Lot 330 - Walnut tall case clock, circa 1772, by Joshua Humphreys Chester County, Pennsylvania, eight-day works, rare sweep second hand and pewter chapter ring bearing the maker’s name “Joshua Humphreys White Land”. Lot 434 - de Longpré, Paul [French/American 1855-1911] Victorian watercolor of roses and bumblebees, signed “Paul de Longpré 1898”. Lot 550 - Chester County, Pennsylvania Queen Anne walnut tall case clock by Benjamin Chandlee, c.1758, the sarcophagus blind fretwork bonnet encasing a silvered brass face with pewter spandrels and Roman numeral chapter ring below a bull’s-eye signed “B. Chandlee, Nottingham” all over a waisted case with tombstone door over a conforming base with step-down molding. For a similar example see Chester County Clocks and Their Makers by Arthur E. James, pages 76 and 77. Provenance according to documents: Clock was purchased on December 3, 1963 by Miriam and Alfred Clegg at the A.R. Cox Auction. It was sold for Dr. Samuel S. Simons, MD, Lancaster, PA. The clock was originally in the possession of the Haines Family of Mt. Welcome in the southern part of Lancaster County near Nottingham, Chester County. Lot 578 - Cased surveyor’s instrument, 1795, by Goldsmith Chandlee, Winchester, Virginia signed “G. Chandlee” and also signed “J. Robinson”, the name of the surveyor the compass was made for. Inside the original case is the rare original label reading “Clocks, Mathematical Instruments & c. Made and Watches Repaired. Goldsmith Chandlee Winchester”. For similar example see six Quaker Clockmakers by Edward E. Chandlee, copyright 1943 by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, page 137, fig. 82. Compass measures 14.5”l.x6 3/8” dia. Lot 222 - Youth percussion gun, c.1800, signed “Artemis Smith” and lock signed “H.W. Delavin”, 41 caliber, relief carved, silver plated brass and ivory mounts. 51”l. Lot 250 - Sully, Thomas [American 1783-1872] oil on canvas portrait of Captain James Biddle, U.S.N. (1793-1848), and signed “T.S. 1826”. According to Sully’s daybook the painting was commissioned by Nicholas Biddle, (brother of James). Cleaned, revarnished and relined sometime in the 20th c., scratch to face approx. 1.5”l., repair to canvas approx. 3”l. c.1930, new mending plates on period stretcher. Lot 100 - Punch decorated tin coffeepot, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, stamped “W. Shade” (Willoughby Shade, active 1842-1870), made for and inscribed “Sarah Gargas”, and with peacock and tulip decoration. For a similar example see Pennsylvania German Arts, Irwin Richman, page 117. 11.25”h.x10”w. Lot 493 - New Hampshire Federal cherry tall case clock, c.1790, with pierced fretwork bonnet, painted face with moon dial signed “Abel Hutchins, Concord, N.H.” concealing eight-day works above a conforming case with square door flanked by fluted quarter columns with brass stops above string and bellflower inlay, ending in straight bracket feet. Lot 186 - Hall or banjo signal, base marked 1842, maintainer’s platform, working top w/#M9985 on back.
450 - Pennsylvania Queen Anne walnut tall case clock, circa 1770, signed “Wilm. Huston, Philadelphia” having a sarcophagus top bonnet surmounted by three finials above a glass door encasing a pewter dial with brass spandrels with pewter chapter ring, Roman numerals and eight-day movement all above a case with tombstone door, conforming base and ogee bracket feet. Provenance: Cooper Family. 400 - Essig, George Emerick [American, 1838-1926] oil on canvas New Jersey harbor view with sailboats and steamers, signed and dated LL “Geo. E. Essig/ 1878”. Relined, original frame and stretcher. Lot 365 - Oil on canvas painting (laid on board) cityscape, probably Greenwich Village, signed LR “John Wells James”.
Lot 604 - Georg Jensen sterling silver tea service with coffeepot, teapot, covered sugar bowl, creamer & tray. 250 - Oil on canvas landscape painting, Chester County, Pennsylvania, c. 1800, of the residence of Lt. Col. Jonathan Jones. Unsigned, cleaned, relined, some in-painting and mounted in a new frame Lot 203 - Pair of Delaware Valley five-slat side chairs, c.1780. Paul Storr seal box and document. The circular seal box, engraved with the Royal seal of King George III, was made by one of London’s most famous silversmiths, Paul Storr and attached to it was a Royal document on parchment empowering one Phinius Bond with “Full Power” to negotiate parts of the John Jay Treaty with President George Washington. Phinius Bond was a Loyalist born in Calvert County Maryland, lived most of his life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was buried in London, England. Delaware Valley five-slat ladder back armchair found in an attic and generated a lot of pre-sale interest. The chair had wonderful proportions and retained its original crusty red painted surface. Rare 18th Century American Pewter Teapot from the collection of Joseph O. Reese of Havertown. Lot 222 - Philadelphia Chippendale mahogany tea table, c.1770, with finely carved acanthus leaf knees and ball and claw feet. This table appears to be by the same hand as the Howell Tea Table, plate 214, in Horner’s Blue Book of Philadelphia Furniture. Lot 400 - Oil on canvas portrait of Madame Adele Sigoigne attributed to Bass Otis accompanied by a letter dated June 9, 1816 from Nicholas Biddle on his stationary as President of the Bank of the United States to Bass Otis at his studio in Philadelphia addressing the delivery of the painting and Biddle’s satisfaction with the work. Light surface crackature and buckling, old but not original varnish, original frame with perhaps some early 20th c. changes and repainting. Lot 425 - Oil on canvas portrait of General George Washington attributed to Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), one of several copies made by Peal of his famous “Porthole Portrait” of Washington, and mounted in an ornate early 19th century rococo frame. Cleaned, relined and restretched c.1930, some evidence of inpainting on face and bottom of uniform, original framed repainted. 216 - Newcomb College art pottery vase, c.1928, with N.C. #185 on base. Lot 300 - Rare Watercolor portrait attributed to Thomas Sully of Eliza Falconett Middleton, was the wife of Izard Middleton and the granddaughter-in-law of Arthur Middleton, signer of the Declaration of Independence, the family home being “Middleton Place” outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The attribution comes from a later copy of a letter (that will accompany the painting when sold) dated 1816 letter to Samuel Craig of Baltimore from a Mr. DeKantzen (who uses the pen name Kit Kat). DeKantzen identifies the subject of this watercolor as “Mrs. Middleton of South Carolina” and notes the artist as Thomas Sully. The letter continues on in noting how striking Kit Kat found the portrait. Lot 158 - 1901 Pope-Waverly electric car. Provenance: Atwater Kent Museum. 343 - Lathrop, William Langson [American, 1859-1938] oil on canvas impressionist landscape painting of fields and rocks signed “W. Latham” titled "Martha's Pasture" and mounted in a gilt Yates frame.
